Chile: May Day riots in Santiago / Chili : Les défilés du 1er mai se terminent par des incidents

On Tuesday May 1st, the march happened from Central Station, in front of the University of Santiago, toward the Plaza los Heroes in downtown.

The march, which left at 11 AM, advanced rapidly to where the situation was set. There began the first confrontations with the police, which left a Itau bank completely destroyed and looted as a result, and a study institute destroyed completely and a Banco Estado branch burned, which needed the firefighters to put it out, while in the street the barricades kept burning.

The special police forces confronted the encapuchadxs who attacked them with rocks, sticks, bottles and fire. The mall’s signage was torn down and the streets full of propaganda and action.

After this, the police arrived with their mounted forces, their cars and bombs, dispersing the people. It is said that there were 20 arrested for disorders in downtown.

Les défilés du 1er mai au Chili se sont terminés par des incidents graves à Santiago et mineurs dans d’autres villes du pays, avec des affrontements entre des manifestants masqués et la police. A Santiago, des milliers de manifestants ont parcouru la célèbre avenue de l’Alameda à l’appel de la CUT, la principale centrale syndicale du pays, pour réclamer de meilleurs salaires et conditions de travail.

A la fin du défilé, des dizaines de manifestants masqués ont lancé des pierres sur la police dont un agent a été blessé au visage, selon ce correspondant.Les protestataires masqués ont érigé des barricades de fortune et attaqué des commerces et des équipes de médias qui couvraient l’évènement. La police les a dispersés en tirant des grenades lacrymogènes et à l’aide de camions lanceurs d’eau. Des incidents mineurs ont été rapportés dans d’autres villes du pays comme Valparaiso et Concepcion.
